Man shares story with hopes to prevent workplace accidents

Life experience can often be the best teacher for California residents and others throughout the country. When workplace accidents occur, many can learn from the event. A man in another state is sharing his experience of an accident that changed his life forever. He hopes to prevent future incidents.

A 39-year-old mill worker recounts the story of starting work at a mill when he graduated from high school. He was given a 10-minute tour of the facility and about five minutes of training on his job. He didn't ask questions because he didn't believe he would be hurt. However, he observed several unsafe procedures as well as numerous injuries among his co-workers over a three-year period on the job.

At the age of 21, the man was working on a piece of machinery when a board got stuck in it. He lost his balance trying to remove the board, and his arm was caught in the machine's conveyor belt. As a result of the accident, his arm was amputated below the elbow. He now speaks to thousands of high school students in the state of Washington, discussing the importance of safety training. The talks are sponsored by the state's Department of Labor and Industries.

Many workplace accidents in California would be preventable with proper safety training. However, some companies have not adequately trained their employees and accidents may occur. If someone has been injured on the job, a knowledgeable workers' compensation attorney can provide much-needed guidance in the process of pursuing compensation.
